Enjoying recreation

A ribbon of green runs through Lichtenberg, from the south of Karlshorst across the banks of the river Spree at Rummelsburg Bay to the north of the Barnim region. In the middle of Berlin, gardens, lakes, parks, fields and meadows invite you to switch off from the noise of the city and enjoy nature.

The Barnimer Feldmark Regional Park beckons with its extensive network of cycle and footpaths that extend as far as Copenhagen. The best places to rest and recuperate are the Dorfkate (Village Cottage) at Falkenberg, or the Wild Life Centre at Malchow, where nature can be enjoyed with all the senses. A palace for animals is the Falkenberg Animal Home opened in 2001 - the world's biggest and most modern animal home.

Animal lovers are in for a treat in Lichtenberg: Berlin-Friedrichsfelde Animal Park, Europe's largest landscaped animal garden, contains over a thousand species of animals which feel at home despite more than a million visitors a year.

Lichtenberg you will keep you moving! At the Sports Forum, Germany's largest Olympic base, top athletes strive for top performances and sportsmen from a variety of clubs train here, while recreational sportsmen swing through the air in the high rope course or conquer "Monte Balcony". The Trotting Course at Karlshorst has been the home of equestrian sport for over a hundred years.

The Borough offers real cultural treasures as well: the Theater an der Parkaue radiates far beyond the Borough as Germany's biggest stage for children and youths. Museums, galleries, open-air works of art and studios of successful fashion labels show the creative side of the Borough.
